Polyploidy can arise through various mechanisms, including errors during cell division (mitosis or meiosis) or through the fusion of gametes that have not undergone reduction division. In plants, it can also occur through hybridization between different species followed by chromosome doubling. Polyploidy is less common in animals but can still occur under certain conditions.
