These compounds are primarily formed during the incomplete combustion of organic materials such as coal, oil, gas, wood, and garbage. PAHs are found in the environment through natural and anthropogenic sources including forest fires, volcanic eruptions, and as by-products of industrial processes and vehicle emissions.
