Over 2,000 different mutations in the CFTR gene have been identified. These mutations can be classified into six different classes based on how they disrupt the function of the CFTR protein. Common types of mutations include missense mutations, nonsense mutations, and deletions. The most well-known mutation is ΔF508, a deletion of three nucleotides that results in the loss of a phenylalanine at position 508.
